A Common Question I am asked is when do I need my goalie skates sharpened? Goalie skates need to be sharpened when a goalie can no longer catch his edge or it starts to slip out on butterfly slides. If you are skating 3 times a week or less. Goalie skates should be sharpened about once a month. More than 3 times. You will need to sharpen once every two weeks.

The pro shop should ask what would you like your hollow? (Most hockey parents are stumped by this question.) The hollow is the depth that they cut into the steel to make an edge. A great place to start is 1/2 inch. After testing it out you may want more of an edge or less of an edge.

If you are slipping out or don’t have enough edge. You should look to try 7/16 inch  or 3/8 inch.

If you have to much edge and can not slide on your edges. You will need to try 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch.

There is no correct answer. Once you find what you like write in on the bottom of your goalie skates so you can always remember.
